What is Embrace Zouk Online and how did it come to be?

In 2019, after teaching many workshops about close embrace in Brazilian Zouk, Kelsey and I realized there were not many options for people to learn more about it and what movements could be created from it. Being two people that love dancing in this position, we developed the desire to show people the versatility and the amazingness of dancing in an endless close embrace! We wanted to show how soothing for the body and how beautifully complex “simple” could be.

With that in mind, we created the Embrace Zouk Weekender. A 12-hour dance learning marathon, with two different levels and a lot of content, showing the foundations of dancing comfortably in close embrace and all the crazy, fun things we can do.

Take a look!

In 2020, we were ready and excited to take this workshop around the country. But then...you know...COVID. After a few days feeling super bummed about everything that was put on hold, we saw an opportunity to take this workshop to a broader audience and spread the message of dancing in close embrace everywhere.

Without any hesitation, we created this Embrace Zouk Online course, which contains all of what we teach in our Embrace Zouk Weekender, plus a couple things that we created more recently.

Take a look at this short video with a little bit of what you will see!

What is our goal for you?

  • Tap into the roots of Brazilian partner dancing

We want you to be comfortable dancing a whole song (and hopefully more) in close embrace and perceive the power of this simple hug, this rooted embrace.

  • Experience the versatility of dancing in close embrace

You can actually do crazy, cool looking things in close embrace, and they all have the ability to feel super comfortable.

  • Master comfort and creativity

Our main goal for you is to develop mastery of an important but often overlooked Brazilian Zouk position, through learning the foundations, the vocabulary, and the understanding that a dance doesn’t have to be open and full of only complex patterns to be exciting.

“Well I don't even know where to start. I guess all of us know the feeling when all the pieces suddenly fall into place, even though you've been hearing same things in different places? I've been dancing Zouk like 6 years now, I've been to many festivals and classes and I've encountered a couple of these moments while dancing. This course, Embrace Zouk, dancing in close embrace is gonna provide you that feeling, when everything makes perfect sense. It's very clear and precise, it's funny, it's well organized, lessons are perfectly shaped and timed, exercises are efficient and well explained. This course has it all and it has certainly changed my way of perceiving Brazilian Zouk. While I was first using these principles in social dances it felt soooo right, it felt so comfy, it just felt good. It helps you build better connection, care for your partner, and create incredible things for all types of music ! :)”

“What a beautiful journey this is! Gui and Kelsey are thoughtful teachers and mentors on the art of the close embrace, not to mention the wonderful (and sometimes humorous) videography by Ian Takeshi. The most empowering part about this course is the focus on the fundamentals & foundations. Not only are Gui & Kelsey an aspirational pair, they are also relatable in their movements, their words, their energy, and their ideology. Anyone--no matter what you look like, what level of experience, or how "athletic" you are--can be a wonderful dancer and a conscientious dance partner. There's a lot of teachers out there that preach about empowering dancers, but THIS right here is real. Thank you both for your dedication to building community, technique, and artistry all at the same time. ”
